Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for calm, but schools canceled classes and activities as a precaution.
City and state officials demanded that ICE leave Minnesota after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good was shot in the head. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, however, warned that the agents were not going anywhere.
The Department of Homeland Security deployed more than 2,000 agents to the region in what it called its largest immigration enforcement operation ever. Noem said more than 1,500 people had been detained.
The murder of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, which occurred Wednesday morning in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, was filmed by witnesses. That evening, hundreds of people gathered for a vigil.
Some attendees chanted slogans, but there was no violence.
"I would like ICE to leave our city and for more members of the community to mobilize to make that happen," said Sander Kolodziej, a painter who attended the vigil to support the community.
Conflicting Accounts
In the videos of the event, an ICE officer can be seen approaching a vehicle in the middle of the street, demanding that the driver open the door. The officer is seen grabbing the door handle of the SUV.
The Honda Pilot begins to move forward, and another ICE officer standing in front of it draws his weapon and immediately fires at least two shots at close range, leaping back as the vehicle moves toward him.
