Authorities report that Nathan "Nate" James Novakowski, age 18, was shot and killed by the New York State Police at a residence in the 170 block of Rotary Road (listed as 176 Rotary Road in reports).
According to initial statements, troopers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, they allegedly found Novakowski threatening a woman with a pair of scissors. Police say Novakowski refused commands and became increasingly agitated, allegedly attempting to stab the woman. Troopers then opened fire, fatally striking him.
Trooper Johnathon Butcher, a four-year state police veteran, was the trooper who fired the shot that killed 18-year-old Nathan J. Novakowski, of Chemung, state police said.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, Butcher and a Chemung County Sheriff's deputy responded to 176 Rotary Road in Chemung for a reported active physical domestic incident, state police said. Butcher reportedly located Novakowski in the living room, physically threatening a woman with a pair of scissors.
In an effort to deescalate the situation, Butcher issued several commands for Novakowski to drop the weapon, according to state police.
Instead, Novakowski became more agitated and attempted to stab the victim, at which time Butcher fired his service weapon to prevent imminent harm to the female, fatally wounding Novakowski, state police said. The female victim, who's name was not revealed, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Greater Valley Ambulance.
