Davao City, Philippines – July 25, 2018: Rio Fe Valerio Mendoza, a mother of two, died in the hospital after eating “white balut,” a traditional Filipino dish. This is an affordable street food made from bird eggs (usually duck or chicken). The eggs are fertilized and contain an embryo.

The woman accidentally consumed an egg prepared in unsanitary conditions and contracted salmonellosis. Salmonellosis is a common bacterial infection that typically causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after exposure to Salmonella bacteria. Infection with Salmonella bacteria usually occurs through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, or egg products, or by drinking unpasteurized milk.

She was in critical condition at the hospital starting March 17, 2018, but after undergoing multiple surgeries and a long battle with the illness, she passed away.
