A resident and seven men identified as drug traffickers died this Wednesday (18) during a Military Police operation against the Comando Vermelho faction in the Morro dos Prazeres region – a community that connects the neighborhoods of Rio Comprido and Santa Teresa, in the center of Rio.
Among the dead is the drug trafficker Claudio Augusto dos Santos, known as Jiló dos Prazeres, 55 years old, one of the most wanted in Rio. In retaliation, criminals set fire to buses and blocked roads in Rio Comprido, causing terror in the region.
During the traffickers' attempted escape, Leandro Silva Souza and his wife were taken hostage inside their home by six bandits. According to the police, during the failed negotiation attempt, the resident and all the bandits were killed, according to the Military Police. The woman was rescued.

Two PMs were injured. One was shot and the other hit by shrapnel. Jiló's wife was also shot in the leg and was admitted to Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital.
One of the buses was set on fire around 11 a.m. on Avenida Paulo de Frontin, one of the main access points to the Rebouças Tunnel, which connects downtown to the South Zone. As of this report's last update, the road remained closed in the direction of Lagoa.
Earlier, around 10 am, other buses had already been used to block streets in the region. At the same time, businesses in Rio Comprido operated partially, after drug traffickers ordered the stores to close.
According to the Rio Operations Center (COR), there were intermittent closures on roads in the region. The blockades reached Rua Itapiru, in Catumbi, and Rua Barão de Petrópolis, Estrela and Avenida Paulo de Frontin itself.
Several buses had their keys removed and were used as barricades during the action. In a statement, Rio Ônibus reported that some lines had their routes changed.
The action was carried out by agents from the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE), who entered the communities in the early hours of the day. There was an intense exchange of gunfire upon the arrival of the teams.
In total, 151 police officers participated in the operation, with the support of 14 vehicles and two armored vehicles.
According to the corporation, the operation aimed to execute search and seizure warrants against members of the Comando Vermelho (CV) suspected of involvement in vehicle thefts and drug trafficking in the region.
