The historic Gampa Mallya Swamy temple is located in a dense forest in the Anantapur district. A statue of the main deity sits atop a hill,
but access is so difficult that a priest must descend approximately 12 meters to perform pujas. During the Shravana month, many worshippers
gather for darshan (prayer) to the deity. Papayya Swamy, a 55-year-old temple priest, was descending the stairs as is customary when he slipped
and died at the scene. Despite the efforts of worshippers, they were unable to save the priest, who suffered multiple fractures and head injuries.
Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media. Worshippers recalled that the priest, who had performed pujas at the temple for ten years,
was descending the stairs unaccompanied. Singanamala police have opened an investigation following a complaint from worshippers.
