Frankly, I can’t imagine how a country could end up like this. The only other country in Latin America with something similar is Colombia and its leftist guerrillas (though I don’t think it’s the same, since the FARC and other organizations aren’t mere cartels but political movements).
It’s surreal to think of “criminals” whose weaponry isn’t much different from that of the national army. Not only do they have similar loadouts (some even appear in images wearing helmets and night-vision goggles) and drones, but some cartels even possess improvised armored vehicles (“narcotanque” or “monstruo”).
