Father Luis Alfonso, "Padre León" was born in Charalá, Santander, on February 25, 1939, he entered the Diocese of Montería in 1966, after having completed his theological studies.
He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1967; Monsignor Miguel Antonio Medina, appointed parish vicar in Nossa Senhora de Fátima de Monteria and spiritual director of the Minor Seminary of San José in this city.

For many years he was Rector of the Juan XXIII Minor Seminary.
He carried out his priestly ministry in the parish of San Carlos Borromeo, in the municipality of San Carlos and in the parishes of San José Obrero, María Madre de la Iglesia, San Luis Beltrán, San Pablo Apostol, the Immaculate and the Cathedral, in the city of Montería. He was currently ministering at the Parish Center of San Antonio de Padua in the sectors of Bonanza, Villa Sorrento, Santa Teresa, Villa Natalia, El Limonar, Mi Refugio, Venice and was attached to the Parish of San José Obrero.

He is recognized in the city of Monteria and the department of Córdoba for his links with education and media, sports (cycling), bullfighting, medicine as a homeopath, aviation and politics as a civic mayor. of Montería in the period 1995-1997.

Death surprised him on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, in the sacristy of the Temple of Mary Mother of the neighboring church of Sucre, Monteria, as he prepared to celebrate the Holy Eucharist.

THE CRIME

Although the authorities have not made known the hypothesis of the causes of the crime, witnesses said that days before the crime, Father León Pereira prevented a robbery inside the church, some people presume that the murderer could be the same person.
The suspect would be a homeless person who lived close to the crime region.
For several seconds, the homeless man attacked Leon Pereira, with a bottleneck, causing several cuts on his body, one of the fatal blows hitting the neck region.
The killer tried to flee while other people arrived at the scene to help the priest who still had vital signs and asked for help.

People who were close to the place began to chase the street resident, minutes later he was reached and detained by the angry population.
Enraged they dragged the killer down the street with the intention of tying him to a tree and then killing him, but at that moment the police arrived and prevented the lynching.
